Collaborating business teams What’s unique about partnering with companies with advanced digital capabilities? Collaboration. MIT Sloan Management Review research finds that focusing on collaboration within the organization and with external partners and stakeholders is critical to how digitally advanced companies create business value and build Job Function Email List competitive advantage. These companies recognize that digital transformation blurs and sometimes eliminates traditional organizational boundaries and requires a focus on cooperation and collaboration that is unprecedented for most businesses. The broad implications of this finding are evident in three separate research projects.

MIT has conducted over the past three years: a recent survey-based study on digital business trends in collaboration with Deloitte Digital, Achieving Digital Maturity; A survey of research projects focusing on the Internet of Things ( ); and a case study project exploring data-driven organizations. While the benefits of collaboration are clear, the reality is that many organizations still have a long way to go in making collaboration a priority. Less than half of respondents to our annual Digital Business Survey agreed or strongly agreed that our organizations are increasingly organized around cross-functional project teams (not necessarily functions and departments) to implement digital business priorities.
